World Premiere Screening... "Bahia de Cochinos, Nuestra Perspectiva"

Provocative New Film Premieres in Union City
"Bahía de Cochinos, Nuestra Perspectiva"
("Bay of Pigs, Our perspective")

(Union City, NJ)  The City of Union City, Mayor Brian P. Stack & Board of Commissioners present the World Premiere screening of the documentary "Bahia de Cochinos, Nuestra perspectiva" on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at 7:00 PM at the Union City Performing Arts Center, 2500 Kennedy Boulevard, Union City, NJ.  Free Admission.  Refreshments served. Free parking at the Parking Deck located on 23rd Street between Summit & Kerrigan Avenues.  The cast and crew of the film will be present.

"Bahia de Cochinos, Nuestra perspectiva" is a documentary film about the Bay of pigs as told through the eyes of Cuban Exiles who actually participated in the invasion.  Now, many years later, they contemplate the happenings and share their individual satires and feelings with us.  That story comes at a price, a price we ask them if they would be willing to pay again.  When all is said and done, are these past invaders resentful?  Do they cast any blame?  Who lost most in the Bay of Pigs invasion?

Featured in the film is testimony by members of the 2506 Brigade: Ángel Casabona Ruiz, Isidoro López González, Ricardo Montero Duque, Raúl Puig Sánchez, and Alvin Ross Diaz; as well as Sergio Gatria, director of the Cuban Information Center.  Their stories are moving and shed light of the infamous Bay of Pigs Invasion.  The film is bound to create some serious dialogue about what truly lies behind the events leading up to the invasion and the fallout thereafter.

The film is directed by renowned Cuban director, Ricardo Bacallao and Lucio Fernandez; and produced by MeLu Films and The Grace Theatre Workshop, Inc.; Megan Fernandez, Executive Producer.  The entire film crew was from Hudson County. The producers held a pre-release screening of the film in 2015 to get feedback before completing the project this month.

(Please note:  this film is presented in Spanish, but informational materials in English will be handed out prior to the screening; and all discussions will be conducted in both English & Spanish.)

Comfort

"Comfort"
a New Play... exposing abuse against women

(New York, NY)  The Hudson Fine Arts Foundation & The Grace Theatre Workshop, Inc. will be presenting the provocative new play, "Comfort", opening on Friday, July 18, 2014 at The Jewel Box Theatre in New York City and running through Friday, August 8th with a Special Gala Performance at Lincoln Center.

"Comfort" deals with the horrific acts of violence towards "Comfort Women" or "sex slaves" by the Japanese during World War II.  The Japanese government would kidnap young girls as young as 14 years old from various countries including China and Korea and send them to their soldiers in the battlefield to "comfort" them.  Details from some survivors attest to being raped fifty to two hundred times a day.  But, more so, the play dares to bring forth the difficult subject of sex trafficking and physical abuse of women world-wide.  The current political issues around this topic are expressed through movement and straight dialogue. In the play, the leading character "Peter" must produce a documentary film about Comfort Women, but his boss disagrees with Peter's chosen subject matter.   In the meantime, Peter meets "Roksun", a comfort woman, in his dream.  With a great mix between experimental movement & poetry about serious political matter the play presents an important subject in a palpable artistic way.

"Comfort" is Written & Directed by Jung Han Kim; Produced by Megan Fernandez; Lighting Design by James Vitale; Costume Design by Ashley Rogers; Ou Hyuk Im, Production Manager; and Luis Camacho Dilorenzi, Stage Manager.  It stars Lucio Fernandez, Shannon Kelly, Taylor Schramm, David Couter, Josh Tucker, Audrey Smith, Kelsey Knight, Cat J. Lane, Ian Jesse Curtis, and Pallavi Seth.

Two Union City Actors go to NYC

Union City's only professional theatre company, The Grace Theatre Workshop, Inc. presents the world premiere of the dark comedy "Till Death" by Lucio Fernandez.  The play opens on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at 8:00 PM at The Producers' Club Theatre, 358 West 44th Street in NYC for a limited run.  There will be a VIP Reception following the opening night performance on Wednesday, November 20th.  The play is directed by Peter A. Dubo and stars two Union City actors, Ruth Kavanagh and Lucio Fernandez.

"Have you ever been afraid of your wife or girlfriend?"  Ruth Kavanagh plays the "perfect woman" wishing to help Lucio Fernandez' desperately delusional and suicidal "Tony". What the character of "Tony" discovers is that "Some commitments must be kept."  "Tony" finds himself lost in the illusions of his mind, constantly tormented by nightmares; nightmares driven by women from his past.  In a constant search for peace... "peace of mind", he comes to believe that death is his only answer... the only way out of his predicament.  But is that what he really wants?  In his quest for peace, he finds that a commitment is a commitment, and some cannot be broken.  In fact, some commitments are more than one can bare.

"Friend Wanted" is the tale of a man in search of a friend within the confines of the loneliness found in city living. In this avant-garde theater piece, the story is told through dialogue, pantomime, dance, and music.  This is a tale of dreams missed, and hopes lost.  It is about an individual's search for a sense of belonging in a world seemingly gray and cold.
