New York International Concerto Festival

The Hudson Fine Arts Foundation announces their schedule of concerts for the New York International Concerto Festival entitled “Concert for Peace: Empowering the Oppressed with Music" to be held January 2014 at various venues including Lincoln Center in NYC.

In our crazy fast-paced world full of hectic hustle and bustle with people scampering without direction in their lives, the Hudson Fine Arts Foundation shares love and culture throughout the world. Since its founding in 2011, the Foundation has showcased the talents of musicians to the local community to bring inspiration, warmth and the beauty of the arts to those who need music as a tonic for various conditions.

Based in New York, the multi-cultural Hudson Fine Arts Foundation kicked off with a concert series called Concerts in Love where young musicians performed over one hundred concerts in various nursing homes and childrens’ hospitals in New York and New Jersey. Since then, with the support of New York Congressman Charles Rangle, Congresswoman GraceMeng and State Senator Brian P. Stack, the Foundation grew to new heights as it has become a government recognized group. For their service to the community, the Foundation was awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award, the highest volunteer service award in the nation.

In 2013, the Foundation started an Asian-American exchange program where musicians from both countries came together to perform in concerts for the handicapped, low income families, people suffering from depression, as well as the elderly. Because these people, under normal circumstances, would not be able to go to concert halls or other such venues, it was the Foundation’s wish to bring the concerts to them and to give them a sense of hope. This was the start of their Art for Peace series, in which the idea was to make the concerts more meaningful than justmere performances.

This past summer, the Foundation took on The Arirang Project with a concert series in South Korea to help commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of the Korean War with many war veterans in attendance. The Foundation also hosted the first annual New York International Concerto Festival with concerts at Lincoln Center in NYC, as well as at the Union City Museum of Art and the Union City Performing Arts Center. These concerts were also broadcasted by the Hudson Cable Television Network.

With the success of this past festival still fresh in the memories of those who participated and attended, the Hudson Fine Arts Foundation will host the second annual New York International Concerto Festival with three concerts: Sunday, January 19 at 6:00 PM at the Union City Performing Arts Center featuring the Union City Philharmonic Orchestra; Wednesday, January 22 at 7:00 PM at the Union City Museum of Art; and Saturday, January 26 at 6:00 PM at the Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center in NYC. This series of concerts is subtitled, “Concert for Peace: Empowering the Oppressed with Music.”  With each festival, the Foundation seeks to bring to awareness to a different and important social issue, so as to prevent present and future injustices on that subject. The topic of this year’s festival is on the plight of the "Comfort Women" during the Korean War, as well as the sex trafficking of both women and children in countries such as Congo and Cambodia. All concerts are open to the public and free of charge.

The Hudson Fine Arts Foundation continues to strive in spreading the message of peace and hope through music and the arts, inspiring a new generation of listeners as well as performers. For more information, please visit:  www.hudsonfoundation.org.

Two Union City Actors go to NYC

Union City's only professional theatre company, The Grace Theatre Workshop, Inc. presents the world premiere of the dark comedy "Till Death" by Lucio Fernandez.  The play opens on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at 8:00 PM at The Producers' Club Theatre, 358 West 44th Street in NYC for a limited run.  There will be a VIP Reception following the opening night performance on Wednesday, November 20th.  The play is directed by Peter A. Dubo and stars two Union City actors, Ruth Kavanagh and Lucio Fernandez.

"Have you ever been afraid of your wife or girlfriend?"  Ruth Kavanagh plays the "perfect woman" wishing to help Lucio Fernandez' desperately delusional and suicidal "Tony". What the character of "Tony" discovers is that "Some commitments must be kept."  "Tony" finds himself lost in the illusions of his mind, constantly tormented by nightmares; nightmares driven by women from his past.  In a constant search for peace... "peace of mind", he comes to believe that death is his only answer... the only way out of his predicament.  But is that what he really wants?  In his quest for peace, he finds that a commitment is a commitment, and some cannot be broken.  In fact, some commitments are more than one can bare.

NEW Art Exhibit by Abby Levine

(Union City, NJ)  The City of Union City, Mayor Brian P. Stack & Board of Commissioners cordially invite the community to the new solo art exhibit “Inside Out and Backwards” featuring artist Abby Levine opening on Friday, May 10, 2013 at 7:00 PM at  the William V. Musto Cultural Center located at 420 - 15th Street in Union City, NJ.

There will be live music and refreshments.  The artist will be present to speak about her work.  Admission is free.  The exhibit will remain up for approximately two months.

The show will consist of carved wood paintings and wall reliefs completed within the past year.  Abby Levine has been living in Union City since 2008.  She has been exhibiting her work since she graduated from Tyler School of Art, Temple University in 1976.

While a student at Temple University, Abby became involved with pattern and decoration, banding columnar stretched canvases with intense color. Figurative elements and narration began to work their way into the equation and, by the early 80’s, she was producing small papier mache dioramas based on Greek mythology. A move to the trash-strewn Williamsburg section of Brooklyn led to a preoccupation with architectural forms and the production of fragmented, constructed and reassembled wood structures painted in shades of white. Relocation to Seattle brought a reexamination of color and the use of dead-matte paint along with a continued development of wood construction techniques. The tension between the organic and manmade became a major focus. After 1991, the narrative and architectural merged with the addition of pyrography (woodburning) as a linear device. The retention of architectural elements referenced furniture and religious constructions, with the overall form of the piece providing a metaphor for its content. Making narrative pieces generated a great deal of scrap wood, which eventually became parts of new pieces, more abstract and less pre-determined.  The most recent pieces are meant to be fiercely whimsical, teeming with life, and independent of cultural context.

“Friend Wanted” opens in NYC

The Grace Theatre Workshop, Inc. presents "Friend Wanted" by Lucio Fernandez from Wednesday, June 26 to Sunday, June 30, 2013 at The Producers' Club, 358 West 44th Street (corner of 9th Avenue & 44th Street) in New York City.  The bilingual play is directed by Lucio Fernandez and Peter DuBo, with choreography by Megan Fernandez who also serves as Assistant Director.  It stars Lucio Fernandez, Megan Fernandez, Fernando Contreras, and Amy Smith.

"Friend Wanted" is the tale of a man in search of a friend within the confines of the loneliness found in city living. In this avant-garde theater piece, the story is told through dialogue, pantomime, dance, and music.  This is a tale of dreams missed, and hopes lost.  It is about an individual's search for a sense of belonging in a world seemingly gray and cold.
