Union City Art Gallery at City Hall

 

Union City Mayor Brian P. Stack and the Board of Commissioners announce that the City of Union City will host their March art exhibit at the Union City Art Gallery at City Hallwith an opening reception on Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 6:00 PM.  

 

The art exhibit will feature artists Carmen Garcia and Ramon Guerrero. Union City Art Gallery curator, Amado Mora and the Union City Artist Collective, is organizing the event.   Refreshments will be served and admission to the event is free.

 

The Union City Gallery at City Hall is dedicated to giving local artists a free space to showcase their art as well as to continue the City’s mission of encouraging more art in the City and improving the quality of life of all its residents.  The Gallery will feature different artists in monthly exhibits.  Artists that would like to be included in future exhibits should contact the Union City Office of Public Affairs at 201-348-5746 for more details. The entire community is invited to attend this wonderful event. Support art, local artists, and beautify our community.

 

The James Austin Trio in Concert

Stack & Board of Commissioners, and The Union City Performing Arts Center proudly presents The James Austin Trio in concert, an evening of live jazz music on Friday, March 23, 2012 at 7:00 PM at the Union City Performing Arts Center, 2500 Kennedy Boulevard, Union City, New Jersey. Admission is free and parking is available at the 23rd Street Parking Deck located on 23rd Street between Summit & Kerrigan Avenues.

Union City Observes Women’s History Month

Art Exhibit "Let's Go Crazy"

The William V. Musto Cultural Center will host an Opening Reception of Liza Calache's new art exhibit entitled "Let's Go Crazy" on Friday, March 16, 2012 at 7:00 PM at the Art Gallery & Concert Hall in the William V. Musto Cultural Center located at 420 - 15th Street in Union City, New Jersey.  The artist will be present at the event, greeting everyone and speaking about her work. The event will also feature a special performance by multi-award winning pianist, arranger, conductor, singer/songwriter Tracy Stark.  Admission to the event is free, and refreshments will be served.  Everyone is invited to attend. 

About the Artist & Her Work (from the artist, Liza Calache)

I was born in Brussels, Belgium.  I came to the United States as a child.  Even though I had a strong passion for art, I went into the sciences to avoid the “starving artist” reputation.  However, art remained a part of my life.  I have taken general art classes in high school and college where I was exposed to the history of art, and the various forms and techniques of the masters.  I must acknowledge two artists, Agnes Dauerman and Eric Alugas. They have shown me to just fill the paper with what you see, and how you see it. When people see my work, I’d like them to take a trip with me through a journey of music, art, and love.  Why do I do the work I do?  I like to take my viewers through my life through music, art and a big dose of love.  My art begins with a song and goes through emotions, times, places, people and ends up as a piece for you the viewer to see me.  One of my friends has described my work as “Art from the Heart.”  Each piece tells a story.  So what’s my technique?  I begin each piece by listening to a song that deals with the emotions I am feeling.  As I am listening to the song, I write down my favorite words or phrases I hear.  Then I use those words to inspire the sketch as the song is on repeat on my iPod.  Once the sketch is complete in my sketchpad, I begin sketching onto the piece of wood.  Then the fun begins with the glass.  This process is very particular but very random at the same time.  I take a sheet of stained glass and depending on my mood, either shatter it on the floor or randomly nip pieces with a tile nipper.  After the sheet is cut, I take each piece and find the perfect place for it.  When I work with glass, I am reminded that I need to respect each piece and place it where it is meant to be.  So what kind of artist am I?  It is very difficult for me to be classified into a specific category of art because I feel like I made up my own.  I definitely can be classified as a contemporary mosaic artist with influences from Van Gogh, Matisse, and Picasso. 

About Tracy Stark - Pianist, Arranger, Conductor, Singer/Songwriter

Tracy Stark is a 5-time MAC Award winner, in the categories of Piano Bar Entertainer (2008.2009), Music Director (2009, 2010), and Song of the Year (2011). She is also a Bistro Award winner for Musical Direction, and winner of the Dottie Burman Songwriter of the Year Award. Tracy has worked with Lesley Gore, Phoebe Snow, Karen Black, Randy Jones (Village People), Jimmy Osmond, Tovah Feldshuh, Eric Millegan, Tonya Pinkins, Ann Crumb, Marni Nixon, and hundreds of other rock, jazz, and Broadway vocalists. She has conducted, played, and sung at all the finest and the sleaziest venues all over the world. She has played/conducted on numerous television shows, including The Today Show. Her songs are included on at least twenty different compilations, and have been winning accolades in songwriting competitions for the past two decades. Her last CD, ‘Feast for the Heart’ is exquisitely produced by Richard Barone, and includes a duet with the inimitable Phoebe Snow. She is currently in the process of recording a new CD, on the wonderful MIRANDA MUSIC label.

Art Show "All Too Human"

The City of Union City will host an Opening Reception of Craig Radhuber & Abby Levine's new art exhibit entitled "All Too Human" on Friday, January 27, 2012 at 7:00 PM at the William V. Musto Cultural Center located at 420 - 15th Street in Union City.  The artists will be present at the event greeting everyone; there will be live jazz music by The James Austin Trio, and refreshments will be served.  Admission to the event is free, and everyone in the community is invited to attend. 

Craig Radhuber and Abby Levine are residents of Union City.  In their work, they advocate freedom of thought and movement for all humans on the planet.  

Abby Levine was born in Newark, New Jersey and attended the Tyler School of Art, Temple University, graduating in 1976.  Since then,  her work has been exhibited in Philadelphia, New York City, New Jersey, St. Louis MO,  Massachusetts, Seattle, Lubbock, Dallas, Houston, Marfa and Austin Texas, as well as in Mexico, Canada and India. Her work has been showcased in many publications worldwide. 

Abby began working in wood in 1991, utilizing pyrography (wood-burning,) painting, layering and carving to convey her message. The work revolves around three basic themes:  politics, philosophy, and popular culture.  Her goal is to make it beautiful and playful, as well as thought provoking.

Abby is very active in Union City's thriving arts community, where she is a member of the board of the Union City Artists' Collective.  She received the Premio ARTE in 2010 for her painting and sculpture.

Craig Radhuber was born in Jersey City, and grew up in Wayne Township, New Jersey. Craig has strong ties to Union City since both of his parents were born here in the 1920s. His grandparents on both sides of his family settled in Union City and made it their home for life.

Craig built his first pinhole camera in 1966 and began to play around with photography, and by 1970 he was developing his own black and white film and creating enlargements. Craig began to show his work alongside his grandfather, William Radhuber Sr. who was renowned  for his miniature oil paintings.

Today Craig has begun to show his work again using photography and mixed media. His themes revolve around human dignity and the removal of physical and cultural barriers.  Craig has been a resident of Union City for the past two years.

Cubanoson: The Story

The New Year has begun in Union City with the release of the short documentary "Cubanoson: The Story" featuring Papo Ortega's Cubanoson, New York's Cuban Orchestra.

It is a behind the scenes look at what makes this popular orchestra so unique in the world of Latin music. The film features Cubanoson's musicians, with music by Papo Ortega, as well as a dynamic live performance by Cubanoson of Guillermo Portabales' classic "El Carretero". The film is directed by Lucio Fernandez and produced by MeLu Films (www.MeLuFilms.com) in association with Cubanoson Productions (www.Cubanoson.com) and El Gitano Discreto Productions. The film is dedicated to all who love Latin music and particularly Cuban music.
